New England "Transcon"
After years of dreams, Mike made plans to spend April and May riding 3500 solo miles across the USA, using the effort to raise money for cancer research at Dana-Farber as a supplement to his regular Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) fundraising.  Donations, large and small, are welcomed and can be made via this link.

Then -- COVID.  Rather than scrap the plan, a "virtual transcon" -- 3500 New England day trip miles, carrying all supplies for the day.  The first 2000 miles will cover all 343 mainland Mass. cities and towns, the rest will add adjacent states.  If you would like to be added to the blog d-list, use this email link.

Day 35:  Guided Tour (53 miles)
Busted!:  (19 miles)
Day 36:  Have a Gansett! (65 miles)

Having determined that Rhode Island would be the next state to explore, I got help -- I reached out to PMC teammate / RI resident Trevor -- he graciously volunteered to give me and Marc a guided tour, using the lovely East Bay Bike Path as a starting point.  The path runs nearly 15 miles from Providence down to Bristol, mostly along the ocean -- lots of vistas, very scenic.  Trevor also led a tour of Colt State Park -- built on the former estate of Samuel Colt, nephew of the inventor of the 6-shooter.  After leaving Trevor, Marc and I continued on into Providence, visiting the only major university named after a color.

Marc returned with me for another day of RI exploration but -- 10 miles in my shifter failed -- 2500+ miles, first mechanical problem.  After limping most of the way home, I flatted.  Marc rode the remaining three miles back to the car to come back and fetch me.  I reflected on all of the (very many) times these types of failures would have been devastating over the past 6+ weeks.  No complaints.

With Tammi (my road bike) in the shop, I got Ian to be tandem partner for another RI tour -- this time visiting the source for Narragansett Lager -- the "cool, clear waters of the Scituate Reservoir".  Built by the same engineer who later built Quabbin, with the same consequences of drowned towns and displaced people.  But without it -- we would never have Capt. Quint providing the prototypical best practice for crushing a Gansett can.  Ian and I worked to crush our ride in equal style!

2625 miles down -- 875 to go!  Still in Ohio -- pointed towards home!
